Robin Meets Lulu: Trading Smells

by Jon Katz

Sheep and many animals (like donkeys) recognize each other by smell more than anything else – dogs too.

We put Robin and Laurie out in the Pole Barn so they and the other animals could get to smell and know one another.

That is to guard against the lamb getting stomped or butted when he enters the real world in a few weeks.

Donkeys are among the most curious of animals, and they are also guarding animals.

It’s very important that they know newcomer’s spells, they don’t let strange animals into the pasture. Donkeys have been known to stomp lambs thinking they are intruders.

Lulu came right over to the fence and so did Robin. They had a good long look at sniff at each other. I call it trading smells.

Now Lulu will protect Ribon from predators as well as the other sheep.

  1. I am getting a huge boost from your pictures of this amazing little lamb. After a year of so much loss, it is very uplifting to share in seeing your surprise baby thrive. For me, he’s becoming a bit of a mascot – a symbol of a good year to come with the end of the pandemic in sight and the Presidency filled by a good and empathetic person. Robin also looks like he’s going to be a great wool sheep for Maria.
