Rental Car Blues: Too Big, Too Small

by Jon Katz

I miss my banged-up Toyota Rav 4. It’s the perfect car for me and the perfect size. I love driving a hybrid; I love being able to get in and out of it easily.

I hope to get it back in a couple of weeks.

I am not liking the rental cars the insurance company is paying for while my Toyota is being repaired. Performance Auto Body sent me a text message yesterday, which means the repair work is getting underway.

The first rental was a giant Jeep Cherokee whose dashboard looked like the control panel of a 747. It was too big, had way too many features and options, and I didn’t like it.

So I brought it into the car rental today and asked for a medium-sized car. I got this Nissan sedan, a nice old couple car that requires a detailed plan for me to get in and out of it.

I’m not going back to the rental place again; I’ll live with this. It’s easy to drive and more comfortable for me to drive than the giant Jeep. I’m working on learning what I need, not what is offered me, and that car didn’t go with my plan.

The Nissan is closer. Maria hates it and has been making fun of me all afternoon. I didn’t have a lot of choices.

My car suffered $10,000 in damage when I swerved to avoid an out-of-their lane van and ended up sliding down a snowy and icy hillside while the car nearly rolled over and got hung up on a bunch of boulders where it dangled for a good while.

It took two huge tow trucks to pull it out of that ravine.

Three good samaritans stopped and pulled me out. I’m grateful. I miss my car.

  1. I learned to drive on an eight passenger Mercury station wagon — remember the bench seat in the back? At one point, my husband and I were driving a Ford wagon the same size, and I could whip that into any parking spot that presented itself. They and all the others were comfortable to drive.

After my 2003 beast finally developed enough rust that my mechanic had to say something, I bought a (used) CRV.

I hate it. It is safe. It handles well on the road including with a strong crosswind. It is comfortable on long trips.

BUT when you look out the window, you can’t see where the car ends. I finally figured out it has a muffin middle. You have to rely on how well you focused the sideview mirrors. BAH!
