“Like a bird on the wire,
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free
Like a worm on a hook
Like a knight from some old
fashioned book
I have saved all my ribbons for thee
If I, if I have been unkind
I hope that you can just let it
go by
If I, if I have been untrue
I hope you know it was never to you
Like a baby, stillborn
Like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone who
reached out for me
But I swear by this song
And by all that I have done
wrong
I will make it all up to thee…”
-Leonard Cohen, Bird On The Wire
Every afternoon, I sit down on my favorite chair and I take my hour of peace and meditation, of reflection and solitude. Usually, there are two dogs lying at my feet, sometimes three.
Maria is in her studio, or tonight, loving her Belly Dancing Zoom Class, a commitment of faith for her. I listen to music on my Iphone, using my ear pods so the outside world is screened out and I can think.
I almost always begin with a Leonard Cohen song, he is always calming and meaningful for me, he always has a message I need to hear.
Tonight, it came from the bird on a wire, one that comes right out of my soul: “Like a bird on the wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir, I have tried in my way to be free.”
I have this idea that this is what we all want, but of course, I can’t speak for anyone else but me. It’s a beautiful line to reflect on, though.
Mr Cohen cuts to the heart!
Leonard Cohen is one of those gifted persons who put good poetry to music. He left us some great songs and poems. “Bird On The Wire” being one of them. RIP Leonard Cohen.
