A secret admirer sent me this reproduction of Thomas Edison’s first successful use of electricity, a light bulb that came to life in his New Jersey Lab.
Although Edison patented the first commercially successful bulb in 1879 and is widely credited with discovering electricity, Italian Inventor Alessandro Volta developed the first practical method of generating electricity, the voltaic pile.
A number of craftsmen and artisans make and sell reproductions of the famous “Edison Bulb” like the one above, wired into a block of old wood.
We put it in the dining room as a monument to creativity and determination.
I don’t know who send it to me, there is no return address – it’s a Valentine’s Day present, said a computer typed note – but thanks for thinking of me.
You say you know me and are a friend, so I will sort it out and figure it out eventually.
It inspires me and encourages me to be creative and work hard and fight for what I believe. Every time I think of this light bulb, I think of a new idea being born in someone’s imagination.
thats neat! I still remember going to the lab when I was a kid. Thing I remember most is the amazing space he had to work. Huge and bright and the coolest wood cabinets with hundreds of drawers. I’ve kept that liking, I have a 8′ long watch parts cabinet from a business in MN that my mom worked at. They were throwing it out, she got the top half as the bottom would have have needed a crane! One of my favorite things with its 56 drawers. I use it for office supplies and small craft items. beautiful old walnut. Anyway, items that keep us reminded of our inner life are important. I like that one. Cheers
That light bulb is unique but I love the pig … those eyes!
In your spare moments (HA), check out Julius Braunsdorf of Pearl River NY. He invented the carbon-arc bulb before Edison’s filament version. He was also a visionary for the planing of our town of Pearl River, originally known as Muddy Creek!
As always, stay safe and be well.
Thomas Edison’s birthday was yesterday.
