The Blower Cometh. I Like It

by Jon Katz

Amazon is definitely getting its stuff together, I ordered a Snow Joe battery cordless blower Friday evening, worn down by two days of shoveling. It was waiting by the back door when we got up this morning.

It was too late for the Nor’easter that clobbered us Wednesday and Thursday – no conventional snowblower could handle that storm – but I thought it might come in handy for trimming and future storms that are more reasonable.

I never expected it to get here so fast. I have to hand it to this company, the blower was completely assembled except for the two very powerful ion batteries. Maria got it together in a few minutes.

I went to the gym to work out a bit and turned it on when I got back. It’s quite wonderful, really simple to use, and powerful enough to widen some of the paths we dug and widen the space around the animal feeders.

This company really knows what it’s doing, buying things online is always dicey for me,  but this blower greatly exceeded my expectations.

The company recommends using it only one hour at a time to save the battery life and power, I got a lot done in that hour and fell in love with the machine. It means I can help out without taking too many risks with my heart.

I had a blast pushing it around. We are mostly dug out now. The animals have some room to maneuver and I dug a path to the Compactor. Now we can reach the garbage cans, the contractor, the chicken roost, and the mailbox.

Maria and I made the rounds, she knocking the snow down with her shovel, me following it up and blowing it away with the blower. Great teamwork.

The Snow Joe is not quite as powerful as a gas-driven blower, but it is surprisingly powerful for a battery-powered machine. The ion batteries are strong.

It doesn’t pull itself forward, I have to push it, but it’s less intensive than heavy shoveling.

One of our remaining problems was our solar panel, clogged with snow and the pasture snow was so high, the snow couldn’t fall off. Maria climbed over the fence and walked on snowshoes out to the panel and dug the snow away from the bottom.

The snow slid right off. It is very rare – not since 1993 – for us to get snow that high, it isn’t likely to happen often.

I’m impressed with my snowblower, and the way it was put together and works. A good fit for me, and I love the idea that I can help out. We wanted to stay green, and the battery blower will work fine for us.

I can go to surgery tomorrow in peace, there is not much more digging to do. There is a lot of snow on the roof, and when that comes off, that will be one big mess.

A good day today. It’s never taken three days to clean up a snowstorm before, not for us.

  1. I’m very impressed with the service of Amazon this season! Especially glad they came through with your snow blower.

  2. I love Amazon, I really do! Their detractors can say what they want, Amazon works! I have had an account with them for nearly 16 years, and have never had trouble – not with returns, nor broken or defective things, which have been rare. The work is grueling, I have friends who work there, but the pay and the benefits are so attractive. Snow blowers are super fun for me! Once we fire ours up, it’s hard for me not to just go from house to house, snow blowing driveways and sidewalks! It’s a game-changer. We haven’t had to use ours here in Illinois for the last few years.

  3. Jon- would you tell me which model you purchased? I would dearly love to get one for my husband. Our problem is that if it’s too heavy, we have to take it down a set of stairs to get to our large corner lot, with a lot of sidewalk. Did you find it heavy to push?

    1. Ann, its in the blog post, I’d suggest browsing on Amazon and reading the reviews, as I did…best way to do it I think..what works for me may not be good for you..
