Day Three: Almost In Control

by Jon Katz

For the first time since Thursday, Maria and I got off of the farm today. We went to Tractor Supply to pick up another hay feeder for the sheep, so they can spread out a bit in all this snow.

We stopped and I bought Maria some wine. On the way home, we stopped to see Emily Gold and get some of her pasties and scones for the holiday.

We stopped at the food co-op so I could get some provisions for my pizza tonight – organic white crust, shopped and fresh lobster chunks, with asparagus, mozzarella cheese, and tomato sauce.

Before making the pizza, we dug out another ton of snow around the house and piled up in the back yard. We dug out the chicken coop. We raked some snow off the roof – there is a lot left.

We wore ourselves out again, believe me, the surgery Monday will be a rest.

The animals are edgy and spooked. They can barely move, even as we frantically dig paths around them. There is just more snow than either of us has ever seen.

But we are getting there. We are in control of the farm. The animals are fine. Even little Bud has found a place to poop outside, he is no fan of cold and snow.

Of all of us, Zinnia is having the most fun, diving into the snow, eating icicles, trying to grab shovels. She was born for this. This morning, it was too cold even for the hardy fate, who was dancing around on the cold snow.

We had to put her inside. Zinnia is indestructible. The snow is nothing but fun for her. We are in for the night. Tomorrow, more shoveling and a trip to our local farmer’s market. Provisions for the week.

  1. That’s a lot of snow, the last time we had a storm like that was in fall of 1997. We were touring the college in Laramie WY and what was supposed to be an overnight trip turned out to be a 4 days. The kids still talk about that life excursion. I’m glad you’re enjoying it’s beauty and sharing it with everyone!

  2. the three pieces I just read made me think about how grateful I am that I have reached the age where I can choose my priorities, and have confidence that I know how to do that. For most of my youth, my answer to having to make a choice was just to figure out a way to do both things.

I don’t know if this comment is a direct response to any of these posts. Just stream of consciousness. I see you choosing “what to do next” in all of these.
