Morning Mist: Surgery Week

by Jon Katz

Next Monday, the 21st, I’m scheduled for my third and final surgery of 2020, perhaps 2021 as well.

That means a week filled with tests and meetings – a pre-surgical meeting at the hospital today, a Covid-19 test on Wednesday a clearance appointment at the cardiologist on Wednesday or Thursday, depending on a huge Norteaster steaming up the coast and due to land mid-week.

As the Covid surges, there is also a chance the surgery will need to be re-scheduled. Things are complex in America, but I am beginning to feel some of the holiday spirit seeping through the cracks of pandemics and politics.

I’m sure it doesn’t sound like it, but my health is good. My heart procedures went off beautifully and I’m exercising happily and enthusiastically every day.

I’m hoping Maria and I can get off to Vermont for two days just before Christmas and on Christmas day. We both are in need of a bit of time off.  We’ll see.

Virus cases are beginning to surge in our county for the first time, and so, under Maria’s watchful gaze, I’m being very cautious about where I go. We’ve come too far to blow it now, and I am mindful of not getting anyone else sick either.

I’m heading off to the hospital this morning, be back this afternoon.

  1. Best wishes for a successful surgery!!! Facing surgery inherently involves trepidation, more so with schedule changes impending … not to mention Covid and inclement weather. Schedule wise, mentally preparing for surgery is like getting ready for an Olympic event. You want to peak at the right time. Sending good thoughts that all goes well, hopefully this week. And whenever your surgery, that healing is swift.
