Christmas Help For The Mansion Aides

by Jon Katz

(A month ago, we sent the Mansion strings of LED lights that blink and change colors, those lights are up and brightening the Mansion. Thanks.)

Every December, I ask the Mansion aides if they need any help getting presents for their kids and grandkids. I’ve helped some already.

I got the second sign-up form back today, and seven of the Mansion aides requested help getting presents for their kids or grandkids.

This has been a hellish year for the Mansion aides, they are up against it. Not one Mansion resident contracted the virus and the staff is exhausted and many are just broke.

I’m giving the aides a Wal-Mart Gift Card for each child or grandchild. A $50 card for teenagers, a $25 card for three years and down. If you want to help, you can purchase a Wal-Mart gift card in any amount, and sent it to me, Jon Katz, 2502 State Route 22, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816, or you can send a donation to me, Jon Katz, via Paypal, [email protected], and I’ll purchase the cards.

I distributed $400 worth of gift cards to the Bishop Maginn refugee families in need and to Mansion aides who have run out of food money and after the county government, which is also out of money, refused to help them.

The need was urgent.

This is hard Christmas for everyone, I am so grateful we can ease the pain of some families.

  1. Walmart, like everybody else, is running really slow in getting cards out. I ordered cards online two weeks ago and have yet to get them. Better to send money directly to Jon so he can buy some locally.

  2. I am sorry for being so uninformed but is the Mansion not paying its employees ? a living wage? “Mansion aides who have run out of food money”

How is the Mansion earning its income?

    1. Health care workers have underpaid everywhere Eva, not just at the Mansion. I would say yes, they are underpaid, thus the need for some help right now..I’m not at liberty to discuss the finances of the Mansion, and it isn’t my business. They are a loving and dedicated place, very special, but assisted care workers are notoriously underpaid all across this country…I’m sure those in your area could use some help also..

  3. Sadly many people in such positions are paid minimum wage, which varies by state. But minimum wage does not mean a “living wage”. In many places the minimum wage was originally set for teenagers, part time workers living with their parents. I think the idea of a “living wage” may be fairly recent. And the Federal minimum wage is the lowest of all. Some states have increased their minimum wage. Much work to be done making society more equitable.
