First Snow. Beauty Where You Find It

by Jon Katz

We had the first snow of the winter today, it was not a big storm, but it was a beautiful one. I put a bit when the dark days come, this year they might feel darker than usual, I am quarantining when I can and avoiding groups of people. I have surgery scheduled for December 21, I am not certain if the hospital will be available to me.

I compensate for the loss of color and light by working hard to appreciate the beauty of the dark days and the winter. The beauty is very real.

As the storm ended, I went outside to see if I could capture the first beauty of the cold and dark days and I lucked out. Our big and beautiful apple tree was waiting for me, backlit by the barn sensor light.

The camera caught the thin layer of snow on the branches. Beauty is where you find it if you can open your eyes to it.

  1. Beauty is indeed where you find it. Especially with the state of the country now. 3000 people died from covid today and idiots are protesting safety measures. I find beauty in solitary walks with the dog on trails and on the now deserted beach. I find peace from the support of my family, and am thankful that they all have a sense of what is right and sensible for these trying time. When I do see a fleeting deer, a wary coyote, a soaring sea gull , a great horned owl when I walk just before dawn. I envy them their existence in the fact they live in a world where our struggles don’t effect them at all. Their needs are those basic for survival. While they have their own struggles related to their comfort and survival, there is beauty in the relatively simple existence of their life.
We also got an inch of snow here yesterday morning. Everything was very pretty, and it was postcard like for a couple of hours.
I love your political posts, and also ones about the animals and scenes around the farm.
Stay safe and virus free. I just signed up for curbside grocery delivery. I am trying to keep myself plus the grocery workers safe. The surge is real. Let’s all take measures so that we can be here to see the beauty of spring after the beauty?? of winter . Just don’t ask me about that after a nor’easter hits Boston!
Thank you Jon. Best to Maria and the critters.

  2. I get a little down as the days get short but the one plus is getting out when it turns dark, as you did, to take photos of sunsets and lights, especially Christmas lights and decorations. Once the days get long again I am usually in my pyjamas when the sun sets.
