Robin Gets Her Snails, “Me-Paw and Maria…

by Jon Katz

There were all kinds of hiccups and delays, but FedEx came through today and delivered the four snails, two shrimp, plans, and food to Brooklyn for Robin.

Delivery is important when it comes to living aquatic creatures, it can’t be too hot, or too cold, or take too long. Everybody made it through.

The logistics are not simple and Emma worked hard to make sure everything was ready when Robin came home from school. She named the two rabbit snails “Me-Paw,” her name for me, and “Maria.”

She named the two mystery snails “momma and poppa,” she named the two shrimp “shrimpy” and “nothing.”

Robin has been fascinated by snails ever since she saw ours n a visit to the farm a couple of years ago. She always asks about them when we talk.

Emma said she is very excited and has already spent several hours staring at them.

It takes a patient person to watch snails, as they move slowly and are decidedly undramatic. Perhaps their calm is the draw, Maria also can sit and stare at our for a long time.

I felt like a good grandfather today, I got her something she really wanted and appreciated. We have a Facetime date later tonight so I can hear the details.

The pandemic has kept us apart since March and probably for a few months longer. Next in my scheme, a fish tank – Emma is still resisting, but I will wear her down.

We seem to connect on several levels.

  1. Jon, Just sharing this certainly warms the heart, you have an amazing natural gift for engaging your Granddaughter.
During this difficult time of not being able to get together with her, you managed to fascinate her by allowing her to focus on the natural world. All remotely. Way to go! Cudo’s ! Jean
