Maria and I loved lambing, but we decided we were too busy to lamb a couple of years ago. We were both delighted last weekend when Liz Willis, our friend, and shearer, brought us two Merricat (thanks, Shirley Jackson) and Constance, and their mother Lori.
Maria is out with them a dozen times a day making sure they have enough hay and are acclimating, they are wisely getting to know her.
She even goes out at night to make sure they are warm.
It’s great to have lambs here again, and Liz is bringing another lamb over to us in a few days. She can’t bear to bring them to market.
It’s great having lambs here, and it’s good to replenish our flock, some of the other Romneys are getting old and dying,
Maria loves the shearing, the wool-gathering, and the selling of her yarns. This is her work and her future, and it never feels more alive on the farm than when lambs are running around.
The Romney wool is gorgeous, there’s a waiting list to buy it.
We leave a separate pile of hay out each feeding so that Constance and Merricat don’t have to try to bull their way into the feeder where the other sheep are. If you can decide who to be in the next life, I’d consider being one of Maria’s animals.
“Mary (Maria) had a little lamb(s)”.. Congratulations. They are adorable and i know they will be well loved and cared for.
I hadn’t thought of “We have always lived in the castle” in years. Just downloaded to see if I love it as much in my 60s as I did in my teens. Thanks for the reminder!
Oh this is lovely! And I would indeed come back as one of Maria’s animals!!!
