Bud’s Lonely Vigil

by Jon Katz

Bud is many things, but he is not a quitter. He is small but ferocious on the hunt for mice, rats, and chipmunks. Many days ago, he spotted a chipmunk rushing up this maple tree with a mouthful of nuts and seeds.

When it gets cold, the chipmunks disappear and go to sleep for most of the winter. There has been no sighting of Bud’s chipmunk since late August.

No matter to Bud. He holds vigil in front of the tree for hours, waiting for a sign or sound that tells him the chipmunk is still there. Boston Terriers never forget. They just find other chipmunks.
