Celestial Clothesline

by Jon Katz

Some of my favorite images on the farm are the clothes on the clothesline blowing in the wind. There was a lot of wind today, and beautiful autumn sun

and the clothes waved like flags.

Thousands of communities in America now ban clotheslines, they are considered trashy and unsightly in the better neighborhoods. Our is a piece of art, beautiful, functional, a part of nature really.

And it’s really true, the clothes smell amazingly fresh and clean. Today was a special clothesline day, I was very happy to see my clothes out there flapping in the wind.

  1. I dry my clothes outside on a line as well. You’re right, nothing smells as good as laundry dried out in the sun. Using solar power, as we do, with panels generating power and using the sun to dry our clothes helps the earth. 🙂

  2. I wish I could put up a clothesline in the wasteland between my apartment buildings. Well, not a wasteland now, as I busted up, with a sledge-hammer, decrepit asphalt, toted off old tires, broken concrete blocks, and built raised beds 6 years ago. Apartment neighbors were dismissive: no way to turn that area, littered with not just trash but junkie needles, into a garden Now, neighbors and I have a Garden Fund, an ongoing compost project, debate what to plant next spring. We invested this fall in squirrel-proof mesh and supports: row covers. No objection from landlord – glad about everything. Perhaps a clothesline could happen?
