“We Have To Do It. The Journey Begins With Faith”

by Jon Katz

The journey begins with faith – faith in the dignity and the worth of every human being. That is an idea with roots in scripture and in in the canon of America, in Genesis, and in the Declaration of Independence.

The journey is sustained by persistence – persistence in the pressing of the justice of the cause. And the journey is informed by hope – hope that someday, in some way, our restless souls will bring heaven and earth together, and God will wipe away every tear.

I think there’s something brewing in America that’s going to bring people closer and closer together. Adversity can breed unity: hatred can give way to love. We need a leadership of love now, a strong leadership to lift us to transport us, to remind us that God’s truth is marching on. We can do it. We must do it. We have to go forward as one people, one family, one house. I believe in it. I believe we can do it.

We’ve come too far, we’ve made too much progress as a people to stand still or slip back. When I was growing up, there was a song that people would sing in the church.

I’m so glad trouble don’t last always, Oh my Lord, Oh my Lord.

You have to believe that. You have to believe it. It’s all going to work out.”

– – John Lewis, the conscience of America, His Truth Is Marching On: John Lewis And The Power Of Hope.  I have the power of hope. I hope you do as well.

There is something brewing in America, for sure. We have to go forward.

  1. This will sound trivial to others, but it was important to me: A dear friend, whom I love but disagree with politically, and who I know gets her “news” from Facebook feeds (and supported Trump in 2016), suddenly recommended everyone watch the Netflix documentary “The Social Dilemma” and started talking about how Facebook’s algorithms were dictating what “news” she saw. This is a very intelligent woman, but she was genuinely upset to discover this. I’m not entirely sure why, but I took great comfort in all of this. One small step for a woman, but perhaps suggesting a great big leap may be coming for all of us to open our eyes and minds and hearts to what has been going on. Seeds of divisiveness may continue to be planted, but if they’re not watered and they get no sun … I, too, think something is brewing. (Pardon the mixed metaphors.)
