This is our home. When we bought it, there were no trees out front, the sweet old farmhouse looked a bit lonely and barren to us. That has changed, as we hoped it would. The farmhouse is shrouded in green and in October, the beautiful colors of autumn.
This is the right place for us, the first place I ever lived in that I hope to have for the rest of my life. It is my wish to die in this house if that’s possible. Maria painted the door red a few years ago.
This isn’t a house for us, it’s home. We are forever grateful to Florence Walrath for taking such good care of the farmhouse, and to the people before her, who built it so wisely and well.
It fits us and our lives perfectly.
This photo is a gem. I think “Here is a door waiting and one is teased to open it to find what wonders are behind”. Who has lived here in previous generations and who is here now leaving footprints for the future. Thank you for your gift of seeing through your lenses.
I love your red door. It looks so cheerful and welcoming. Maria had the right idea.
Lovely-I also live in an old farmhouse, I am the 6th generation. My family came from Washington Co in 1812-I feel the love you have.
Thank you for your positive attitude, much needed in the negativity that surrounds us. I also appreciate your support and care for Maria. Strong men respect and cherish the females in their life. I have been blessed to have a Dad and husband whom display this same strength.
Describing your earthly home touched a cord in my heart, as that is how I feel about our home in the North Maine Woods of Millinocket!
Heartfelt thanks, Laura L Jones
I grew up next door to Florence. She was an amazing person and was very influential in my life. Although she was my grandmother’s age she was more like an aunt. Every day in the summer (and sometimes twice a day) she would pack 5-7 kids, and sometimes our moms, into her car and take us all swimming at her camp on Lake Lauderdale. She taught us to ice skate. She played all kinds of ball games with us. She was model of hard work and healthy living. Although I had moved away from Cambridge and didn’t get to see her often she came to my wedding in VT when she was in her nineties. She got to meet my sons. I wish you could have known her in her heyday, I think she would have been a subject of many of your stories. It is good to know that someone loves her property as much as you do. Lori V. Marsh
Thanks Lori, I got to know her a bit, but not as well as you and others. I understand she was a remarkable person, and her character is very much alive in our farmhouse, and our lives. Thanks so much for sharing this, I am sorry I didn’t get to know her better. We did have a good time talking about Rocky, her ancient pony. Come visit some time.
Gorgeous photo! Love the colorful trees and your red door. We have a red door too.
