A Happy Ultrasound. Back To Life

by Jon Katz

I don’t wish my blog to be about my health; one of the perils of aging is that life can slowly revolve around doctors and tests and life dramas. I don’t want my blog to be about my health.

I want my blog to be about my life, and my heart is certainly a significant part of it. Monday, I went to have an ultrasound test to see if my carotid arteries need the same kind of intervention the arteries around my heart needed.

This morning, I learned that the test was negative, my carotid arteries are functioning well, and I don’t need any additional interventions.

There are one or two other medical issues that need to be taken – there always are – but my heart is fine,  100 percent for the moment.

I love my daily walks up the hill, and at cardiac rehab yesterday, I did more than 30 minutes on my bike at a higher level than I have ever done.

I can walk up the hill nearby with no trouble, pain, or shortness of breath. I was still feeling the aftereffects of my catheter intervention last week, but that is also diminishing.

For the moment, I can focus on my heart rehab, my walks, and my normal life. I am very grateful to my nurse-practitioner and doctors for their thoughtful and careful work on my heart.

Thanks for sharing this with me. This photo is of the hill I walk up every day. A beautiful time of the year to heal.

  1. Jon, like all of your readers, you have a life, you are an ordinary guy with an extraordinary gift, photography, writing, helping others, connecting with people…so yes, I am interested in hearing that your ultra sound this morning proved you don’t need further surgery, for now…hopefully, it will remain that way.

And I’m looking forward to your thoughts on last night’s conflagration. My summation: Biden smiled; Trump sneered. And he hit below the belt, which I’m sure Biden was prepared for. Lies. The sheriff of Portland never said he supported Trump. Trump claims he did. What makes me curious is the Sheriff’s comment about Trump turning his wife against him. Wonder what that was all about.

  2. Congratulations! Not just on the happy outcome, but for the courage to recognize something was not quite right and take the steps to correct it. It’s just too easy to ignore or explain away health problems, probably because we fear finding out what is really going on. You’re an inspiration and role model.

  3. Unfortunately, doctors don’t order routine ultra-sounds of the carotid arteries. My thin, vegetarian, older dentist almost met his maker last year while working. It turned out to be an emergency situation. My neighbor had much the same situation. Sometimes patients have to advocate and ask to have tests done. It doesn’t hurt to have this simple procedure done on a regular basis.

  4. Jon, I am so pleased to hear that you are “good-to-go” health-wise. I have a vested interest because I am looking forward to reading many more excellent and balanced essays on Trump. I get worked up listening to or reading the various pundits, and I need to read what you have to say in order to calm down. Thank you so much for being a great voice for sanity, reason and perspective.
