Hopper Two: Clotheslines

by Jon Katz

Clotheslines are banned in many gated communities, and washing machines have caused many people to give up on them.

We love our clothesline, and while I don’t ever compare myself to Edward Hopper, we both love photos of clotheslines as well as window curtains blowing in the wind.

The clothes really do smell fresh and clean in a special way, especially when it’s windy.

He is my favorite painter and photographer and I am honored to honor him with an “Edward Hopper” photo app I found online.

  1. I wish I could have a clothesline – not allowed in my apartment complex. I do have a low water usage portable washing machine and doors / windows on east-west sides of the apt. I set up a collapsible drying rack in the living room, drape it with washed clothes, open doors and windows: almost as good as a clothesline.

  2. Awesome photo! I loved our clothes line at our old house, where we are now there are a lot of dust storms so our clothes line is downstairs in the basement. Not quite the same as outside but still saves on the utility bill?
