I live on a busy state road, and I want my dogs to understand that they are never, never to go close to the road. So far, I’ve been able to train every one of my dogs to wander freely from the house to the pasture but never go beyond the front porch.

Our farmhouse is set back from the road. so that gives me some breathing room and training opportunities

I go out to get the mail every mid-day, and Zinnia – that dot in the photo down the driveway is trained to sit down there and stay there until I come back. Even when I get the mail and am carrying it home, Zinnis doesn’t move until I get right up to her and toss her a  treat.

We trust one another Zinnia and me, that is when training really works. She has never gone anywhere near the road.
