Robin’s Birthday Presents, Emily’s Collage

by Jon Katz

Maria and I went to Jean’s Place this morning, then took our breakfast to the Bennington Battle Memorial a few miles away. This is a new stop on our Saturday morning rounds.

After we ate, we went to the Bennington Farmer’s Market, where I saw this great soap for children – soap with characters from the Disney movie “Frozen” inside. I’m sending them to my granddaughter Robin; her birthday is coming up this week.

I’ve been shipping presents to Emma to hold for Robin’s birthday, I think she’ll be happy.

I wish I could celebrate with her but I haven’t seen her since March, and it might be a while before it is safe for us to meet again. So many people have felt this loss and separation.

I’m Face Timing with Robin tonight.

The pandemic is sorrowful and difficult in more than just the obvious ways. I’m not always sure our leaders sense that.

We also went to see our friend Emily Gold, a Vermont artist and baker, and a member of Maria’s belly dancing troupe.

I’ve fallen in love with her collages and cards and I have several now. I smile whenever I see them.

I bought this caterpillar for Robin, but I’m thinking it will stay with me for a while.

Emily has also begun teaching collage online, her first students  –  a teacher, an author, and a reader of Maria’s blog – are very happy with her course.

  1. I made soap for my nephew’s and put coins in the soap, their mother said she did not have any trouble getting them to take their bath.? I am sure Robin will enjoy the soap.
