Morning Chores

by Jon Katz

In the morning, Maria and I walk down to the outer pasture. I throw a water toy in the pond for Zinnia, Fate goes and runs around the sheep, Maria communes with the donkeys, these three are a love circle that lifts the heart every time I see it.

Mornings are precious here on the farm, it is the time when we can be the closest to the animals, there a feeling of peace and harmony at the farm. Animals have taught me so much about finding peace and contentment.

It sounds strange, but if everyone could sit with a donkey, the world would be a different place. It’s a joy to see all the animals so happy and busy, it’s how the world ought to be.

We, humans, are a sad lot in so many ways. Most people have given up on spirituality. Animals are inherently spiritual.

It is a tragedy that the well-meaning but often ignorant warriors of the animal rights movement have made it so difficult for animals to be with people in the real world outside of zoos and rescue farms.
