Dogs Have Always Rejected Politics

by Jon Katz

About 14,000 years ago,   baby wolves showed up near human caves attracted to cooking food and warmth. The deal way would help to hunt for food and bark if some strange thing came around.

In exchange, they got to eat the leftovers and could sleep by fire to get worn.

So began the extraordinary relationship between dogs and people, a relationship unlike any other between humans and animals on the earth.

Sometimes I wonder how those early encounters went, I fantasize that dogs sized humans up and figured out if they could mimic human emotions and trick people into thinking they loved them unconditionally, this would be a lot safer and better than living out in the wild.

Dogs developed big warm eyes, and a knack for acting delighted when their people came home as if they had been pining for them at the window instead of dancing and having sex inside.

Ever since then, dogs have been sleeping inside, getting fed, keeping warm and dry at the expense of humans, who just simply cannot do enough for them.

Dogs are among the world’s most adaptable creatures, and I think they sized humans up and wondered at their cruel and byzantine lust for politics.

Dogs decided I like to think, to love people and be around them, but avoid their nastier traits and habits – like politics. Dog packs have their own politics, of course, they have leaders and followers.

But they wisely chose to turn away from our politics.

They don’t sue one another or campaign for office or go on social media to drive one another crazy. They surely don’t care of Donald Trump is re-elected or not.

They are a fixed point in a constantly changing universe.  My peeps like to sit out and watch me when I go into the barn, the ignore Maria’s, Black Lies Matter sheet. Fate keeps an eye on the sheep, Zinnia likes to sit like Ferdinand the Bull and watch nature, Bud is forever waiting for a chipmunk to come out of their hole.

What a gift these loving, non-political creatures are, I’m glad those wolf puppies stopped to steal some warmth from our ancestors.

  1. Unconditional love and acceptance – the animals got it right! May humans some day get it right, too!
