One Man’s Truth: A Human Superhero Comes To Save Us

by Jon Katz

I’m beginning to see the 2020 Presidential Election in a mystical, almost supernatural way. How is this as a fable for the ages, a future Disney movie, a Marvel Superhero story?

Out of the dreadful muck and rage of our time, just four years after women had their dreams of liberation shattered, while the kingdom is mired in gloom and despair, there comes someone to save us.

It is an enchanting story, a black woman blessed by the Gods descended from slaves rises up out of the Dystopian mist to call us to awaken to a moral and empathetic life.

She has come to teach the people about love and honor, and reject her sworn  enemy, the cruel and the hateful, and the power-mad King. He has killed or driven away the better angels of the once vibrant and prosperous land.

This Superhero, a kind of revered Queen, is not alone. A powerful Army, one the King had unknowingly inspired by his chaotic reign,  and his demeaning of women, marches right beside her.

She lived in peace, sharing life with her children and husband, and had renounced bloodshed and struggle, but she knew she would have to come out and fight if the kingdom was to be saved.

She awakened the battered and demoralized – and so frequently defeated – warriors and called them to the battle, they are moms and daughters, mothers and grandmothers, they are yellow and black and white and gay and weary.

And sick of the eternal anger and argument.

They don’t seek the plunder of men – rape, money, power, expansion domination – they march for freedom, compassion, and empathy. There has never really been such an army in our political world.

These women are different from their ancestors.

They have learned how to be strong and weathered many defeats.

They are no longer afraid to show their emotions and celebrate empathy and compassion. They are not afraid of their anger and strength either; their big hearts live behind shields of steel.

When the mad King used his power without restraint, and to hurt people, they protested and marched and exposed him for being weak and coarse and cruel. He laughed at them.

They pointed out to anyone who would listen that the country was in shambles, that the poor were suffering, that the people were sick and discouraged, that the King was unfit to lead.

They kept fighting. long after most men had thrown up their arms and given up.

They said this was not the King the country needed.

The Queen of the Women Superheroes said enough was enough; she called everyone to fight, to work for a better, kinder,

King or Queen, to act before it was too late. If you don’t think it can get worse, she warned, think again. It can, and it will.

She was not like anyone else.

It was almost impossible not to admire her.  She seemed to rise above all the others, her mix of morel courage, strength, and humanity the right recipe for a Superhero.

It was a call to arms. And women everywhere responded.

What a script!

If we can all stop shivering and complaining for a few minutes, you might see what I see, which is a fantastic story, the biggest of the 2020 election:

This time it’s the women who will save our democracy, not the men with their rifles and big battleships. This time, it’s the women who will be the heroes of the books, the movies, the TV streams.

They’ll do it with votes, courage, and compassion, as well as nerves made of Titanium.

All over America, from Chicago to Atlanta to Michigan and San Francisco, women are rising to challenge Donald Trump, defy him, anger him, and ridicule him.

And, most importantly, they are rising to defeat him. They know only too well what happens when you wound the King, but don’t kill him.

After Michelle Obama’s compelling and electrifying speech at the first Virtual Democratic Convention Monday night, the world waited to see what would come on Donald Trump’s Twitter Feed, the coward’s gift for hurting.

But they were surprised and disappointed.

This King is afraid of this Superhero.

He patronized Michelle Obama, of course, not even speaking directly to her. He did what he does; he suggested this was too naive or foolish to understand his power and might.

Will someone please tell her? she couldn’t possibly figure it out for herself…

He didn’t contradict her speech; he just went after her husband, the only way he could think of to hurt her.

He pretended to be polite, but only came off as weak and frightened.

If people didn’t know the code, they wouldn’t know what he was talking about. This notoriously vicious and thin-skinned man just looked lame.

He goes right for the throats of the men. He just calls the women “nasty” or implies they couldn’t possibly know what they are talking about.

Michelle Obama, one of the most loved people on the earth,  has been chosen to help save our democracy. She answered the call and confronted him with the weapon she knew he feared the most: her and the strong women coming right behind her.

He just didn’t know what to do.

Trump’s Tweet: “Somebody, please explain to (Michelle Obama) that Donald J. Trump would not be here, in the beautiful White House, if it weren’t for the job done by your husband, Barack Obama. Biden was merely an afterthought, a good reason for that very late & unenthusiastic endorsement…..”

And then he did what bullies do when challenged: he puffed himself up and bragged:

..My Administration and I built the greatest economy in history, of any country, turned it off, saved millions of lives, and now am building an even greater economy than it was before. Jobs are flowing, NASDAQ is already at a record high, the rest to follow. Sit back & watch!

The greatest ever! In all of human history! (You know he researched it carefully.)

But don’t we know that strong men (and women) never brag? Michelle Obama never has and didn’t in her speech. They don’t need to say they are strong. They just need to be strong.

Later that morning, at a women’s rights event, Trump said that Michelle Obama was “in over her head.” C’mon tough guy, is that the best you can do?

In calling for everyone to come out and vote, she committed herself and her husband to fighting for the right to vote. Donald Trump has given his enemies yet another good and worthy cause, another reason to do something.

Trump is becoming a caricature of the evil King in almost every one of the Disney movies. He can’t stop lying, he can’t stop bullying, he can’t stop hurting and frightening people. We all know the script. The hero shows up to bring him down.

He is taking a toll on himself: he is a frightened and bewildered little man at heart—the biological opposite of the strong and empathetic woman who slapped him silly on national television.

He really won’t like that.

It used to be that women didn’t dare show their emotions. Then they realized that this is a strength, not a weakness.

Michelle Obama and the black women mayors – San Francisco Mayor London Breed, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, Charlotte, N.C. Mayor Vi Lyles – are potent warriors in this new army of women who are re-shaping our country and standing up to power in the most literal of ways.

None of these women held public office a decade ago or could have won an election. Times have changed. This is not 2016!

Donald Trump, the politician many women hate the most, did this. He is the unwitting architect of his destruction.

It couldn’t have happened without him.

Many of his policies are so disturbing and even repulsive that suddenly, it wasn’t possible to look away from any longer.

Enough is enough, seems to be a universal value and theme of many of these women.

Like Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris, they are all tough as nails. They are also careful to reveal their emotions and to show empathy for the people they were elected to serve. Like Michelle Obama, President Trump has attacked every single one of them, always in patronizing and dismissive terms.

And you know what? They don’t know how to back down either – not from Trump, not from protesters, not from their arrogant governers.

Obama’s blockbuster speech was so good it was easy to forget Kamala Harris’s blockbuster speech just a few days earlier. This new and strong women’s movement has a lot of riches.

Maybe more than one Superhero.

It’s true, Trump does not like powerful women, and he seems to especially dislike powerful black women. If you notice, he never speaks about them directly; he never responds to their criticisms of them.

The big tough white men of the Republican Party folded and ran when the shooting started.  They follow Trump around like hungry kittens. In politics, self-respect doesn’t seem to matter.

There aren’t too many big and tough men in the Democratic Party, but Trump outmaneuvered and stymied them anyway. Nancy Pelosi showed them how it might be done. You don’t have to be a black woman to be a powerful woman in politics.

These contemporary women refuse to be bullied or stymied. And they are happy to talk about their children, their problems and their fears.  Trump can’t do that.

He tells us he has no fears to talk about.

And now, they and the mayors and the suburban women and the moms from Portland and the Black Lives Matters and Me Too women are all coming for him.

I’d get out of the way.

You can bet they will get their followers to come out and vote.

This is their time, and Michelle Obama gave them a Superhero to draw the media and rattle Donald Trump and power themselves to victory.

These women have no intention of losing again. I think their time of tears is ending —all of the real energy and excitement flowing.

The men in their world have failed to stop or protect us from this awful King; most of them do his bidding or bow before him. The Republican Party once stood for some important things. Now they stand for cowardice and dishonesty.

The few who stood up to him have fled or been banished or run off to hide. So women are filling the void.

Feminists have had their hearts broken more often than Justin Bieber’s fans. In Hilary Clinton, many thought their moment had come. Their reverie was shattered by a man who not only dislikes strong women but pays for sex and boasts about grabbing their “pussies” and sticking his tongue down their throats.

It was almost as if the Goddess Artemis had come to slap then down, and say, “not yet, you’re not ready.” They sure seem ready now.

The world is full of crisis and mystery, and I would add, the irony of our presidential election is especially precious.

For much of my life, I’ve hardly ever seen a movie, a TV show, or read a book where women save our democracy, let alone the world.  The movies have some female superheroes now  – Wonder Woman,  Carol Danvers, Jean Grey, Elsa in Frozen.

We tend to think of revolution as swift and violent, but in America, the women’s revolution has been steady but glacial. I think its time is here. No First Lady in America has ever dared to give a speech like that and pull it off with so much flair and power.

One day a few years or so ago, I looked up and suddenly saw women everywhere, in places I had not seen them – Congress, the Senate, doctor’s offices, law firms, even corporate offices.

I love Superhero stories; I grew up on them, I’ve never given up on the idea that they are real.

This year, I think I’m going to see that they are. Maybe one day I’ll even get to meet one.

  1. Michelle Obama gave a flawless speech at the convention. I think of her as the greatest first lady in my lifetime. As we all know she rose from humble beginnings but her parents knew the importance of education. Michelle was a success way before she became first lady.

I too think way too much money is spent in campaigns. I too wish some of this money was spent helping all the people who have lost jobs and suffering because of Covid and our leaders poor handling of the pandemic. But I’m grateful for the media. At least I know from your blog and the news what Trump’s megadoner and recently appointed head of the U.S. Postal Service, Louis Dejoy, has been up too. By removing sorting machines, mailboxes and cutting postal workers hours he is trying to slow down the mail, and make it harder for voters to vote during this pandemic. To my way of thinking this attempt at voter suppression is treason. Trump should not only lose the election he should be instantly impeached.

  2. I love your enthusiasm for the Army of Conscience that has assembled.

I am always reminded of Gloria Steinem saying “One day an army of gray-haired women may quietly take over the Earth!” We color our hair and are not so quiet, but our time has finally come. I am so glad I lived to see this.

  3. I can’t think of a better way to open the Democratic National Convention than with a powerful speech from Michelle Obama. She has it all … beauty, intelligence, empathy, compassion and strength. The word Superhero suits her well. I love this quote from her: “I’ve seen firsthand that being president doesn’t change who you are. It reveals who you are.” All I can say is, these last four years with Trump have indeed been revealing. And I have a feeling that Kamala Harris will become another Superhero as this campaign progresses.

  4. And now Nancy Pelosi has brought the Post Office “management” (mis-management) and the Republican Senate to heel on adequate funds, equipment and overtime to handle the mail ballots. And the professional sports teams are opening up their empty arenas not just as voting sites but also voter registration sites. I’m seeing light at the end of this seemingly endless tunnel.
