Bud’s Escape

by Jon Katz

Bud squeezed out of the back door this morning, a rare escape from the farmhouse. We don’t let him roam alone, he wanders too far doing his hunting.

When I realized he was missing, I went to his usual haunts – places where he spotted a chipmunk and likes to wait in hiding. I found him right near the house, a foot from a chipmunk hole he has been watching for two years.

Bud never wanders too far, and he never runs off, but we think the woods beyond the farmhouse are dangerous for him, boggy lakes, coyotes and foxes, even some big hawk.

He came running when I called him, and back into the house. He struggles in the extreme heat, so he spends a lot of time in the farmhouse.

  1. Yes, lots of things can happen in the woods. I was walking with a friend whose dogs are off leash. We walk on a dirt road with woods on both sides. My dog is always leashed because she isn’t always great about returning. Anyway, his dogs don’t usually go out of eyesight. But this time they did, and I never heard such such canine panic and anger in my life. His dogs, a German pointer and a visula, came bolting out of the woods like the devil itself was after them. A female coyote came after them, and we assumed they had come upon a den with pups. When she got to the road she stopped running but escorted us up the road until she was sure we were leaving the area. Had a smaller dog came across her it could have had a different and tragic ending. Glad you found Bud close to the house!!

  2. It happens. I belong to this group on Facebook lost dogs of Santa Cruz county where I live. And I used to think how can these dogs get lost? So many?
One time I was going out of my apartment and my dog was on the bed a little dog, I went out my door and then I had to go out another door walking to my car as I got to my car I turned around and there was my dog following me. She could’ve got run over, I could’ve left she would’ve been out there by herself. It happens.
I love bud and I love his story. He’s a happy boy now?❤️?
