Dusk: False Alarm

by Jon Katz

We were standing outside in dusk after a dinner of shrimp and cucumber on the back porch. A warm day, but not as hot as the last few. We had a busy civic kind of day.

Maria and I went to the Mansion to put up our “Heroes Work Here” banner, and then Darlene, Tina, and Autumn came bye with Bubba, a cat in need of a home.

We met to talk about how I could help their rescue group, Salem’s Community Cats, which focuses on feral cats and adoptable dogs who were lost or abandoned and need homes.

Feral cats are an important issue, I want to help out. You can also, by donating here.

Afterward, we went to the local farmers market I got a basket of gooseberrys and some food for lunch. Our friend Eve Marko came up from the Berkshires to visit with us, it was wonderful to see her.

She stayed until 3, it is very special to talk to Eve, she is so bright and interesting.

Then I wrote my piece for the blog on the “White Mand’s Last Stand,” and Maria went into town to join in a  two-hour Black Lives Matter demo.  She made a BLM  banner this morning.

A large crowd showed up, two or three men waded through the cloud getting in people’s faces and yelling “All Lives Matter.”

Maria came home afterward and we had our dinner on the back porch.  Zinnia is the only dog we allow out to join us for dinner on the porch.

She lies down on the ground and goes to sleep I am pretty fond for her.

Suddenly, the sheep and donkeys came thundering out of the pasture and into the Pole Barn.

Something spooked them, and Maria took Fate and Zinnia out to help look for it. They tore all over the place with great excitement but didn’t find anything.

Tired, tongues hanging out,  the dogs came in from the pasture and lay down as the sun went down and the sky turned a beautiful dark blue.

It was a lovely sight to end the day, a beautiful sky. You can see Maria coming in from the pasture, she’s all the way on the right.

Sweet dreams.
