Heat Wave, The Animals Know What To do

by Jon Katz

A heatwave is arriving this afternoon and will run through most of next week. The Weather Service says this will be a hotter than usual summer for the Northeast, I think the animals already know that.

Animals know what to do in a heatwave. During the day, they hole up in the shade of the pole barn, the sheep half asleep, chewing their cuds. We leave the pasture gates open all night, when I get up in the night, I look out the window and see them grazing in the moonlight.

The farmers are worried about rain for their crops. Don’t try to tell them any longer than climate change is not real. I love to watch the animals graze, it connects me to the natural world and keeps me calm and at ease.

  1. Do be prepared for the heat, unless you get a cold wave from Canada. It is 95 here in Washington State and on its way east.
