I am still stewing a bit about Ety’s censorship of Maria and hundreds of other artists who used their art to explore the virus and the havoc it wreaked on so many lives.
Etsy and its new corporate owners said they didn’t wish to “exploit” the virus by letting Maria sell her $7 refrigerator magnets that read “The Coronavirus is making women into housewives again.”
The sketch is going on Maria Carona Kimono, a work in progress, also about the coronavirus.
Nobody found this idea offensive or exploitive when it was written about in the New York Times and Washington Post and a dozen other publications, just when artists tried to explore the time of the virus through their art.
That’s what artists do and have done for centuries.
Lots of people have come to Maria’s blog to buy magnets – 65 to be precise. Thanks, she has responded to this by offering the magnets for sale on her blog, she inserted a Paypal button into her post.
The magnets cost $7 per magnet, free shipping. I hope all of these sell, there is nothing offensive or exploitive about them, she will make $2 per magnet.
It isn’t a question of legality, it’s a question of right or wrong. Algorithms and software should not be used to make these kinds of arbitrary and mindless judgments about art. The magnets are 5 ” tall.
You can see them and find them here.
If it doesn’t fit with the new world order, it has to go. “Housewives” being the “offensive” word here.
1984 in 2020.
No Corona was the offensive word, according to Etsy
I agree with patty. When I first read about the censorship, I immediately figured “Housewives” was the problem. I think Etsy is lying.
