The Bishop Maginn Graduation Movie Video. Go Fly!

by Jon Katz

This morning, I want to honor the work we are doing.

Bishop Maginn asked if we could contribute a video to their graduating class this year, and this morning, we put together a short film – me, Maria, Zinnia, to say goodby to the senior class, wish them luck and let our newly liberated butterflies out in our garden.

It seemed to us the two belonged together. I love these children and their school and Sue and Mike and am so fortunate to be a part of this work.

We are helping to keep the school safe and helping to give the students a chance to honor their graduation, which was taken from them.

These children never stop smiling, they never fail to feel and show gratitude, they never complain or whine about their hard lives. They just keep moving forward.

Now, as they graduate, they are moving ahead in the most meaningful and beautiful of ways. The school is putting together a movie of this year for them to keep, I am honored to be a part of it, along with Maria and Zinnia.

Bit by bit, their graduation is now being returned to them, thanks to you.

I thought the butterflies going free – Sue Silverstein sent us a butterfly kit  – gave the perfect symbolism to the moment.

  1. This is such a beautiful video and such a fitting tribute to their graduation to show the butterfly release. Thank you and Maria for doing this for the graduating seniors. We all wish them God’s blessings and the very best in life. May the best be yet to come!

  2. Hi Jon. I’ve been lurking for about a month now and thought it was time to come out, so to speak. I am often really touched, inspired and informed by your posts, both the ones about your everyday life, and the more “political” ones. Thank you so much for living your life genuinely and compassionately, and for reflecting that in your blog. I’ve told a number of people about your blog. And I’ve been meaning to let you know that I quoted your June 1 post–with proper citation and a link, of course–in my own blog post. https://www.blueheroncville.com/post/small-seeds-of-hope-this-is-really-really-hard Thank you, thank you for your big heart, your humility and your humor.

  3. I’m sure you must have told us in past posts about where to get the butterfly kits. Seeing Maria release them today was beautiful & exciting to watch! Can you tell me where to get a kit? My grandson would be so excited!
