A Gift From The Mansion Residents, To Me, To You

by Jon Katz

I heard a knock on the front door today, it was Julie Harlin, the tireless Activity Director of the Mansion, she said she had a gift for me, Maria and the Army Of Good, the residents have been working on it all week with the art supplies we purchased for them when they were locked down.

It reads “Jon, Maria, The Army Of Good, The Mansion,” and to the right of the tree, “We Are In This Together.”

What a beautiful gift, we were speechless.

Maria and I hung the sheet on the red barn wall. Tomorrow, we’ll hang it from the front porch and leave it there so that others can see it.

It means a great deal to me, and to Maria.

How touching that they would take the time and the trouble to do this. I am proud of the work we have done for the Mansion residents during this difficult time of isolation and emptiness for them.

We got the disinfectant fogger some weeks ago, and not a single resident has taken ill with the coronavirus.

We bought lunch once a week for them from Jean’s Place, we brought subs and sandwiches for the exhausted Mansion night crew three or four times a week.

We got the clothes they need, movies, art supplies, paint and eases, puzzles and waterboard pencils, paint and garden supplies, shoes, socks and hairbrushes, Pen Pals and special books for those in Memory Care.

We got banners and toys for the children of the Mansion aides, ice cream Sundae kits twice a week, bought out three different wish lists. We met every need were asked to meet, and some we never thought of.

Julie said they jsut wanted to thank us. I thank you, good people. We did a lot of good this month.

  1. I’m so glad the Mansion residents had the opportunity to join The Army of Good. Imagine how it must feel to be locked in and not participate in giving and thanking. While it is good to receive, sometimes that is more difficult than giving.
What a lovely gesture and engaging activity.
I miss the writing that they shared in your workshops. I miss seeing the photo’s of them working on a quilt with Maria.
This new “normal” takes some getting used to.
THANK YOU TO THE MANSION RESIDENTS for such a heartfelt display of Kindness and Love.

  2. Many of your posts make my heart swell with such love, Jon. This one is no different! What we focus on increases. You chose to focus on how we could help, how we could be useful in very strange and chaotic times. You started this path long before Corona. Thank you for giving us all ways to be positive, and to spread love and light.
