When I first raised the idea of going solar to Maria, we talked about and we both thought it a bad idea, especially now. Our bank account is lean and hungry, there is a Pandemic out there, and the economy is bleeding.
Then a solar salesman gave me the details.
We were pleasantly surprised – even shocked – by the deal. Between reduced electric costs – down 100 percent some months – and a small loan from a credit union, we didn’t need to put any money down.
More than $10,000 in federal and state tax credits made it even easier than we thought. It’s a good time for solar if you are interested.
And the solar will pay for itself every month of the year. Beyond that, I can continue my (our) deepening commitment to do something for the earth besides just walk on it.
So the first phase is today, John showed up to plant poles and pipes for the foundation, the panels are coming in a couple of weeks. It’s a little scary for me, but it also feels hopeful.
It’s odd, but the Pandemic does have it’s opportunities, as creepy as that is to say. I am leasing a new Toyota Rav 4 (my car started falling apart, it was eleven years old) for $300 a month, and it gets 41 miles to the gallon.
The deal was so favorable to the buyer that I was also able to purchase a hybrid automobile, and my gasoline costs are about 60 percent lower than before.
It’s strange, but both of these steps will save money and help the planet. I think I am just beginning to learn about life.
I am learning that it is possible to spend money but also save money in the process if you pay attention and bide your time. Thanks for coming along on this journey with me.
RE: solar panels…..what did they say about snow and hail?
Re: I wish I could be more emphatic about agreeing with your posting on dog training…….well said and I wish more people could read it. Might even change a tiny mind or two……
It will snow and you will use more electric power…not a big deal..

Very few people change their minds, I have found…but some people do think things over..
