Self Portrait. Getting It Right On The Tenth Try

by Jon Katz

I ordered my new blue glasses online at Warby Parker Glasses online. It was a slightly more complex experience than I imagined, but I think it was worth it, and I will do it again.

For one thing, the glasses there offer a very range of choices. Usually, I find one or two glasses that I like, but here I found a half dozen I liked a lot.

If you wish, they will send you five to look at, and you can return all of them and pick the one you want.

You run through the choices online quickly and easily, and there are the usual extras beyond the frames.

I took an Iphobe photo of my new prescription and sent it off. I had some trouble with the pupillary distance measure, the camera has to be held at just the right angle, and I had to take my glasses off and hold any card with a magnetic strip under my nose.

This is a very smooth and sophisticated website, but the camera issues were tricky.

I’m loaded with antihistamines today and am a bit loopy but I really liked my blue glasses. It took about eight times for me to get the photo right, but they answer the phone on the first or second ring and explained to me they really wanted to get the measurements right.

They were very helpful.

I finally figured out where to look and how to hold the card, it took about eight or nine attempts. The staff was great, Sam answered right away and was helpful and patient.

The glasses will arrive in a couple of days, they cost a little over $300, about half of what my glasses usually cost. The site is very easy to navigate and their support is very real, unlike many.

I don’t know if the pupillary distance issue was their fault to mine – I’m a little groggy today –  but I do like that they cared so much and didn’t make me feel dumb. I’d rather jump through a few hoops to have it done right than get the glasses and find they don’t fit.

I’ve actually wanted some glasses with color in them, I think the company is sharp and helpful. I would have to give them an A. The experience showed me even more about the future and the ways in which our new, new economy will work.

  1. Mr. Katz, I’m sorry to have to point out that you’re credit card # and security code are decipharable from your selfie. You might want to blur the card.

    1. Jeannie, the card has not been used for years, and is not usable…As I posted on the comments..
