Today is important on Bedlam Farm for many reasons, but the most immediate is that we stopped feeding hay to the animals and started rotational grazing in our three pastures.
We usually start grazing earlier, but climate changed has changed what is usual for us. With the three pastures, we won’t need hay again until mid to late October.
It is lovely to look out the window and see the donkeys and the sheep dining on the fresh green grass. Two hours in the morning, two hours in the evening. That’s what they get.
I’ve ordered 70 bales of first cut hay for the winter. Grazing makes it easier for us, we don’t have to get up early to feed the animals. Liz, our shearer is coming shortly, the coronavirus delayed shearing for a bit.
They are ready.
I’m off to Jean’s place to surprise Maria with a take-home egg cheese and potatoes. She’s out gardening and won’t know that I’ve gone.
