Every day after lunch, we take the dogs out to the Northern pasture to leet them run and wear themselves out. This in addition to the walks and chores we do with them every day.

A busy dog is a happy dog, and Lab and a border collie who get to run are happier yet, and healthy too. Dogs need stimulation, just like we do. I am very conscious of Zinnia needing exercise and activity, I see too many Labs growing fat and crazy in backyards and basements.

Almost every Lab owner I meet (lots of border collie people too) have horror stories to tell me about their dogs chewing up the house, knocking people over, running wild.

That’s not a natural behavior, it’s usually the fault of humans who love the idea of having a dog, but don’t always love the idea of taking care of a dog. I worry for the many shelter dogs adopted during the Pandemic to keep people company.

What will happen to those dogs when everyone goes back to work?

We are lucky to live around pastures and woods. After running, Zinnia comes into my study to keep me company while I write. This is his work too. Bud dozes on the couch or goes out to visit Maria in her studio.

I love watching Zinnia try to keep up with Fate. Once or twice today, she even beat her to the ball.
