“You Are Not Alone…”

by Jon Katz

“The loneliest moment in someone’s life is when they are watching their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare blankly.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald.

A lot of people are experiencing those loneliest of moments, the poor, the bus drivers and cops, the elderly, the sick and grieving,  the paramedics and grocery cashiers, and the millions of people who have lost their jobs and livelihoods.

It does sometimes feel as if our world is falling apart. I believe that we are not alone, we just have to reach out with a hand sometimes and ask for help.

There are lots of good people out there, I learn this every single day.

Yesterday, I got a message from one of the Bishop Maginn High School refugee student mothers, we have never met or spoken, but I know her children well.

“Sir,” she wrote, “I write to thank you for the gift cards that feed my family. I asked my daughter “who is Army Of Good?” but she wasn’t sure. She said she knows you and your dog but has not met the people in this army.  I told her it is some kind of miracle, something we prayed for. Whoever you all are, thanks for letting us know we are not alone.”

Later in the day, Peggie messaged me on Facebook, she is the only Mansion resident who is on Facebook, she wrote “we miss you, and Zinnia and Maria. Everyone misses you. Please come by and wave. Sometimes we feel like we are all alone.”

Today, I want to reach out to the people who feel that they are alone. That would include the refugees, the Mansion residents, the Army Of Good, and the good people who read my blog.

(This morning, I got up early and purchased $1,000 worth of Price Chopper Gift Cards. I promised myself no one in the Bishop Maginn High School family is doing to go hungry, and the Army of Good is helping me fulfill that promise.

I hope we can keep the gift cards coming (you can learn how to help here.) The $1,000 in gift card money came from people who don’t like to purchase things online. You are welcome to send your contributions directly to me, Jon Katz, P.O. Box 205, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816, and I will happily purchase them for you. If you chose to purchase gift cards online please have them mailed to me at the farm, Jon Katz, 2502 State Route 22, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816. I’ll overnight them to Sue Silverstein)

We are feeding between 40 and 50 families now, Price Chopper delivers to them. Many are getting sick and are quarantined.

This morning, Maria and I began work on a banner we are taking over to the Mansion this afternoon at 2 p.m. to hang outside where people sitting on the porch can see it. Our first banner is still hanging, it says “We Love You.”

This and the regular lunches and ice cream sundae kits are helping to remind them that we are here. Zinnia and I do regular wave-byes.

I have often felt loneliness, but not now. I know I am not alone.
