I went to Jean’s Place this morning to take out my egg n’cheese sandwich, and I was astonished to see that every table in the closed restaurant had beautiful flowers sitting on it.
This was a gift from the people in the town of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., where Jean’s is located. The flowers were sent to cheer up the family and celebrate Mother’s Day. Different peopleĀ – all customers – gathered and worked together to buy flowers for each table.
Each vase was sent by a different person or family.
The one in the foreground was from Bud, a regular customer at the restaurant, the card said “a little bit of sunshine to brighten your days during this Pandemic. Miss you all very much, Bud.”
Jean’s Place means so much to this town, and the town means so much to Jean’s Place. Hoosick Falls has been on its knees for years, it is, like Jean’s Place itself, fighting to come back.
Jean’s Place has always been a warm and loving haven. They were always there for people who needed them.
I believe theĀ Pandemic is helping many of us to understand what places and people really mean to us.
Can you imagine most people sending flowers to their local diner? What a great burst of love and community.
The people in town just wanted to make sure Kevin, Kelly, and Kelsie’s spirits are staying up. The flowers will certainly help.
Jean’s Place does as much social work as food preparation. They really care, and the people who go there care in return. People are so good when given the chance.
Jean’s Place is so worth saving, a lot of people are committed to saving it.
Jon, I am a Canadian. I am also apolitical. Here in Canada I’ve even voted for the Green Party, for I listen to what a candidate says and appears to stand for. I don’t vote for a party because it is a rightful passage of my life. That said, these times remind me of watching the Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s run for election in the 1930’s over President Hoover in the White House. A time when the nation was in a deep depression, unemployment rampant. Not unlike what may follow now with this pandemic Trump refused to acknowledge, refuses still, to hear advisors that this virus will have a lasting effect on our economy, on our way of life, on our health. What is needed now, is someone of courage, of hope, of understanding, of apparent empathy, someone that the nation can look up to. And unfortunately, as much as Joe Biden may be the front-runner for the Democratic party, Trump will eat him alive. Because Biden will not withstand the dirty politics Trump relies on. But Cuomo, Andrew Cuomo, can. Why doesn’t Biden step aside and why doesn’t the Democratic party recognize the candidacy of someone who could possibly beat Trump at his own game. And of course, that being said, Andrew Cuomo would first have to agree to allow his name to be put up for President of the United States. And with this, I fully expect your readers to tell someone from Canada that it is none of my business commenting on politics of the United States. I’m open to that. But I don’t believe I’m wrong. Biden is too much of a gentleman to stand up against Donald Trump. Trump fights dirty and relies on the rest of the country to follow suit.
Sandy Proudfoot, in Canada.
Jon, this post is about the very things I love most about humans – their generosity and love, selflessness and compassion, fun and hope. These are what carry us forward, heads high, and hearts open. Thank you for sharing this!
Jean’s Place is actually in the town of North Hoosick which is where I grew up. Jean’s was my Dad’s favorite breakfast spot when he was in his 90s. The many flowers shows just how loved this restaurant really is.
I love the comment from Sandra Proudfoot and agree with her !00% Why is is that most of the sensible people live in Canada??
