A Man And His Donkeys And Dogs

by Jon Katz

I always feel strong and safe when I have my donkeys and dogs around me. Don’t ask me why, it just feels as if the world is a good place. Zinnia has become good at sitting down and observing the world, Fate is always awaiting the command to run after the sheep and Fanny and I have been eight for years.

There is something calming and grounding about scratching a donkey’s butt. Zinnia is still a puppy, but she is beginning to show one of the great traits of the well-bred Lab. They love to sit around and do nothing.

In these unnerving weeks, I find myself walking out with Zinnia to see the donkeys every day. There is something timeless and iconic about them, they remind me that life is never just easy. That we’ve been there before and will be back there again.

  1. Recently my neighbors came by with their 7 y/o twins to rake my yard. With them came two chickens from their house. My assignment was to watch the chickens from my porch. It was very entertaining. It was like watching water flow. A very nice treat for me, both via the yard clean-up and the joy of watching God’s creatures probably eating ticks from my grass. Stay safe.

  2. I understand and know how you feel. There is something therapeutic about going for a walk with the dogs around the place that you love. I do the same with my Lab most days to check the property and simply chill out. Zinnia is a beautiful Lab! I enjoy your journal and frequently recommend it to friends.

    Thanks.
