Two Muses: “What Do Sad And Angry People Have In Common?”

by Jon Katz

I have two muses now, and I appreciate both of them.

One, my bodyless head, seems sad and calming to me. My new muse, Morrighan, is the iron crow that sits out in the window and looks out at the crows who gather in my front lawn every day.

I have the sense that they complement one another, my statue – still nameless – is quiet and reflective my crow is loud and opinionated.

I think they are working for me right now, and I am superstitious about muses. A good mix I think, I love the two of them together, I look up at them all the time.

In Greek and Roman mythology, the muses were nine goddesses who symbolized the arts and sciences. Today, a muse is a person or thing who serves as an artist’s inspiration. Often filmmakers talk about a certain actor being a muse – meaning the actor inspired the movie.

To muse can refer to thinking deeply, or meditating. Some people muse on ideas for days, months, even years. Today, I was musing about angry people.

Stop Being So  Religious

“What Do sad and angry people have in Common?

It seems they have all built a shrine to the past

And often go there and do a strange wail and Worship.

What is the beginning of Happiness?

It is to stop being So religious

Like

That.”

— Rumi
