A Bright Spot. Sally Comes Into The Light

by Jon Katz

This is a bright spot in these bumpy times. Sally has bonded well with her new owner Kathy and has also adapted to her new home, her “forever” home, as the rescue people say.

One of her favorite things is to lounge in the afternoon sun in Portland, Oregon, where she now lives. I’m sure most of you remember that she was Susan Popper’s dog.

Susan was a friend who died of liver cancer last month.

Thanks for helping to get her to her new home. There’s a bunch of bad news these days, it’s a pleasure to offer some good news, a bright spot in all the din.

I’m not sure Sally ever got to lounge in the sun in her former life. She seems happy and settled and the turmoil and chaos in her life seem to be at an end. And she isn’t going anywhere now.

Sally is a monument to the adaptability of dogs. Most dog people believe that their dogs would grieve and mourn them terribly if they died or the dogs were rehomed. This is not my experience or belief.

Dogs are the brilliant and Darwinian survivors and adaptors of the animal world, they love who feeds them and loves them, and don’t waste time on too much grieving as a rule. Sally is loved, fed, sheltered and cared for.

Millions of dogs are re-homed happily in America, I’m not sure a one has ever starved to death breeding about a former home.

What Sally is getting is what dogs need, that is what love means to them. Thanks, Kathy, for caring so much.

I am happy to Sally and grateful to Donna Nicosia for finding such a perfect home for her. This was my last promise to Susan, and it is a great weight to have been able to keep it, thanks to Donna.

Thanks to you also, Kathy, I’m not sure where Susan is, if anywhere, but if she is looking down on us, this will give her great peace. Good luck to you, Sally.

  1. Coincidentally, I was just thinking about Sally the other day, wondering how she was doing. I think we all could use some warmth and happiness in our lives right now. This photo of Sally sunning herself on the patio is a reminder that happy endings do exist. I have faith there will be brighter happier days ahead for us all. Thanks Jon for sharing this little ray of sunshine.

  2. Jon, I couldn’t have done this without you and Maria. Thank you for the support and love, it opened up a world of hope for me. There are still good people in the world and you are a shinning example.☮️?❤️?
