Griselle, one of our oldest sheep and most imperious of our Romneys, was missing this morning. There was no trace of and we had a surprise and heavy snowfall overnight.
We couldn’t find any tracks. I’ve never experienced that before, one of our animals missing.
Maria went out in her snowshoes with Fate and Zinnia to look for her, and they found her in the swamp in the rear pasture, she was dead.
We can’t get to her or move her in this weather, we’ll have to wait a day or two for the snow to melt. We will take her out to the woods and leave her to the animals in the forest.
Griselle was fading in recent days, we were talking about putting her down, she was confused and seemed to be losing her sight.
I’m glad I didn’t have to shoot her.
She was a character, the Queen of the Romneys, a savagely abused sheep when we got her, she hadn’t been shorn in years and her wool was felted.
She was quite old when we rescued her and she lived a long time with us, happy and healthy.
The farm is my mother in some ways, she teaches me about life all the time. And death. She teaches me to accept both. I won’t mourn a sheep, but I will miss Griselle.
Godspeed Griselle, we were grateful to have you.
So sorry for your loss prayers to you and the bedlam farms
Maria, Did she freeze in the pasture? Was it because she could not make it to the pole barn? But she has a thick coat of wool, right? Such a beautiful ROMNEY sheep. I wish I had seen her and put my hands on her beautiful face!
She didn’t freeze, Eileen,it wasn’t very cold and she had plenty of wool..she just died of old age…
Sorry for your loss of Griselle. Take comfort that you rescued her from a bad situation and her needs were well taken care of at Bedlam Farm for all her remaining years. Stay safe and healthy.
