Friends, Cont.

by Jon Katz

I wonder if one day, the earth will have gotten rid of the greedy and destructive humans, and returned the world to the care of animals, who use what they need, and only hurt when they have to.

One thing we know, they won’t destroy the planet with their greed and cruelty.

Watching the friendship between the Wasp Princess and the Arkansaw Refugee, I am inspired and also saddened. We are such a destructive species, and I’m lucky to have three dogs who know how to live and live their lives peacefully.

These two could not be different but they easily find the parts of each other that are the same.

I smile every time I see these two playing or nuzzling, they are a daily antidote to the news and to human violence and self-absorption.

Bud and Zinnia do not live for money or IRA’s or retirement homes in Florida, they live very much in the moment. For them, the only reality is now.

Bud doesn’t seem to care about his sad past, he loves having a friend to play with and touch noses with.

They don’t compete or dominate, yell on talk shows, hire lawyers, assault each other on social media, label one another. They don’t hate what is different about one another. These two remind me to open up my heart. I don’t want to be a dog, but I do wish to learn from them, they seem to know some things we people do not know.
