Last year, I launched an ongoing program with the Army Of Good to support the work of the Mansion aides, 19 caring, hard-working people who are, like most health care professionals in America, underpaid.
We gave them each $150 worth of gift cards and cash so they could give their children the Christmas they deserved. We funded their new Break Room, where they gratefully eat their lunches and drink the coffee that you and I have sent them.
To me, they are a stand-in for their colleagues all over the country. They need to be recognized for what they do.
I have tried to support their children with occasional gifts of books and Leggos.
And now, I’m working through Part 3 of this program, scrubs for every aide.
I’m halfway there (above is the final list of scrubs requested by the aides. The scrubs I purchased are all crossed out and are on the way to the Mansion.
The right page lists the remaining scrubs I want to buy so that every aide gets the scrubs they need. There are a total of 18 scrubs on that list, ranging from “small petite” size to xx-large.
This is complex, just about every order is different.
I estimate that the remaining scrubs on the list will cost somewhere between $175 and $200, depending on what’s available and at what price.
This didn’t work out as an Amazon Wish List, there is too much searching and sorting I have to do to fill the diverse orders correctly and accurately. I just need to do it myself.
I hope the AOG can help me finish off this list, we are close. You can contribute via Paypal, [email protected], (please note “scrubs”) and by check, Jon Katz, Scrubs, P.O. Box 205, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816.
Over these past few years, I have been deeply moved by the dedication, long hours and challenging conditions under which these people – most young, many single mothers – work.
Health care workers get very little recognition in our country and not much in the way of support. I’m hoping to change that story at the Mansion.
Thanks to you, the Mansion aides and their families had good Christmases, some got help with groceries and winter boots, they have a Break Room to eat and rest in, and soon, hopefully, they will all have new scrubs to wear to work.
Help if you can, and thank you.
