Dogs At Night

by Jon Katz

Our dogs have settled into a sleeping arrangement. When we go to sleep, we turn out most of the lights and set the thermostat to 50 degrees. Fate likes to sleep downstairs, by herself, near the doors and windows to the pasture.

At first, she lies by the stove, which is filled with wood for the night to keep the room warm. Then she moves to one of the chairs or the sofa. I got this shot with the Night Vision tool on my iPhone.

Zinnia sleeps upstairs now, in a dog bed on the floor. She’s allowed on the bed a few minutes before we get up. She is good about it, she only comes up with permission.

Bud sleeps in his crate in the corner of the bedroom, it is warm and safe there for him. Bud needs some safe time in the day and in night. He rushes into his crate and we hear him snoring through the night.

Every once in a while, he passes some gas so we know he is alive. Zinnia lies as Red did, on my side of the bed on the floor. She rarely moves during the night. I sometimes sleep with my foot hanging off the bed, and she loves to lick my toes, which tickles.

I love this very peaceful image of Fate, she is rarely still during the day. She is very peaceful a night.
