Help For Sally

by Jon Katz

Susan Popper died two days ago, and her friend Donna Nicosia is working hard to find her dog, Sally, a permanent home.

Sally is doing beautifully in her foster home, eating well and playing with the other dogs.

Lots of people have offered to take Sally – thanks – Donna has decided where she should go.

Donna believes the best home for Sally is in Portland Oregon. Cathy, the prospective adoptee is eager to have her and will fly east to New Jersey to pick her up and fly with Sally next to her all the way back to Portland.

She needs some financial help to do that.

None of us feel comfortable with Sally flying in the cargo compartment by herself or being handed off to a string of volunteer drivers all across the country. We raised the money earlier this week for Sally to get to the vet, which was $340. Sally has a number of medical issues that need care.

In Oregon, she will also need an echocardiogram for a newly diagnosed heart murmur.

We’ve already raised several hundred dollars for transportation costs, it likes like we will need four or five hundred dollars more.

I realized how sick Susan was when I found her unable to get off the sofa in her house, where she had been lying for days. Neither she nor Sally had eaten in a while, and Susan didn’t realize it. Sally was ravenous.

Donations for Sally are going directly to Donna, who has set up a Paypal page to receive them. Donna’s e-mail is [email protected]. People who wish to contribute can do so directly via Paypal (please don’t send the donations to me) –[email protected] – or you can contact Donna directly for information or instructions on sending money a different way.

Susan’s brother Steven is arranging for Susan to be cremated in a private ceremony. Donna and I talked yesterday and we agreed that it would be appropriate for Susan to have a private memorial service at Bedlam Farm in May or June.

It will be by invitation only.

We will invite her friends and co-workers from the lab at Bennington hospital where she worked. She loved her job and the people she worked with.
