I Love Storms, And It’s A Good Thing

by Jon Katz

My life has been the poem I would have writ, But I could not both live and utter it.” – Henry David Thoreau.

I love walking around in nasty storms with a camera, I can’t say I know why, but it’s a good thing. Because in upstate New York, there will be storms. There are beauty and quiet to them.

I could not bear to live in Florida, although I would love to be warm today.

I drink up the silence and the power and I love how somethings – this house, across from the Mansion – just stand out in a storm and cry out to be recorded.

I rushed over to the Mansion yesterday with Zinnia with a box of hats and sweatshirts, no matter how many I give out, there is always a need for more. I rushed home while I could, and on the way took a dozen pictures.

I give thanks for storms, they quiet me.

  1. I’m with you nothing like a good storm a snowstorm to me is like food for my soul. Right now I’m living in Las Vegas Nevada and when I mention moving back o NNY their first response is ugh it snows there and I always say I would rather be snowed in then sunned in. 112 degrees last 4 months here at least when it snows you dig your way out and can dress for the cold. I’m only here because my brothers wife died hopefully by this spring we will be moving back to Massena our home town born a raised there, Have lived many places in my life but my love for the north country in NY never left me. I’m going back for good.

  2. you can keep your storms, I’ll take Florida in the winter any day!! Different strokes…and to be just 3 miles from the Phillies spring training camp, now what could be better!

      1. Susie, looking at the ‘street view’ of Google Maps, it looks like an evergreen. Maybe a cedar or a spruce?
I love a good snow storm too, and the quiet stillness after. They’ve been far and few between here in the mid-HV this year. Hoping for something this week. Thanks for sharing, Jon!
