Top Of The Stairs

by Jon Katz

Zinnia and Bud both sleep in our bedroom now. Bud sleeps in the crate he has slept in as long as he has been there. It is a safe and comfortable place for him, he loves to go in there, curl up in a  heap of blankets and feel warm and safe.

Zinnia moved out of her crate a week ago, she sleeps on Red’s old bed on the floor next to my side of the bed. Zinnia is going to be a large dog, she’s not going to sleep in our bed, we did that with Lenore and regretted it every night.

Fate, ever eager to work, sleeps downstairs by the door, where she can keep an eye and ear on the sheep out on the pasture. She doesn’t want to herd them, but she wants to be around them.

At night, I say “let’s go to bed,” and Zinnia and Bud rush up to the top of the stairs, they are usually waiting for me when I get upstairs with a couple of biscuits. Bud runs into his crate, Zinnia heads for Red’s bed.

I like having these two great pals near me when I sleep. So does maria. Zinnia is still all night, we don’t hear a peep out of her until it’s daylight and we are starting to talk to each other. Then we let Bud out of his crate and the two are thrilled to see one another and go tearing off downstairs.
