Queen Elsa In Brooklyn

by Jon Katz

My granddaughter Robin loves Queen Elsa in the Disney movie “Frozen,” so I sent her Elsa’s scepter, her crown, and her dress. She was very happy to get them, she Facetimed me to thank me.

I see that even though the Disney heroes are mostly women now, they still wear Princess dressed. The next frontier.

I’m getting used to Facetime, which I hated at first. I don’t have to talk baby talk anymore, Robin and I know how to speak to one another.

Emma also let me know the giant dragon that I sent her (she was afraid to see the dragon in Doolittle but overcame her fear) after she saw that horrid movie (kids like it). Emma said she’s saving it for later, but “it is quite large!”Heh-heh.

It is, in fact, about three feet long. I think she’ll love it.

Robin and I are definitely connecting in recent months. I feel like we are getting each other, even long distance.

I miss her and I miss Emma, my wonderful daughter. Robin is one thing, but seeing Emma so rarely is harder. Getting to Brooklyn is complicated for me, practically and financially.  I’ll have to start working on it when the weather clears up a bit.

I love to see that smile on Robin’s face. If the relationship is real, there is always a way to communicate.
