Sheep In The Storm

by Jon Katz

People sometimes forget that sheep are mountain and desert animals and thrive in the wild, except for predators. During storms like this one, donkeys stay inside the Pole Barn, staying dry and out of the wind, although they can certainly handle rough weather.

Given a choice, they’d just rather not. Sheep do get hungry in cold weather and we keep the water buckets warm and offer extra hay. Most of the time, sheep are happy to sit out in the snow, their coats are already thick and resistant to water and moisture. I liked the photo, it did capture the feeling of feeding the sheep today.

  1. I love looking at the eyes of sheep and goats. They have rectangular pupils to allow them to see around themselves more fully. I always wonder how they see the world with that unique ability.
