Wednesday Morning

by Jon Katz

Wednesday morning, I’m slowly shedding my throat infection and feeling stronger. I’m planning to go to the Mansion this afternoon with Zinnia, and then to Albany on Thursday to plan our new book Regent test review drive Amazon Wish List.

I’m also hoping to visit choir practice with Judi Merriam the new and very charismatic choir director Thursday afternoon. The choir was the first project we undertook at Bishop Maginn, it’s close to my heart and the first choir at the school in many years.

I wrote about the new Bishop Maginn Amazon Wish List last night on the blog, it isn’t up yet, I wanted to give people a heads up.

We want to give the 50 or so students who will be taking the New York State Regents Exam in June copies of the Regent review books students use to study and prepare for the tests, which are necessary for students to graduate.

If we move quickly, the teachers and students can get to work right away preparing for the exam. Hopefully this year every student will have his or her own review copy.

The school has not been able to afford enough of the books in recent years, they cost $10 apiece and we will be asking for between 50 and 60. I think it’s a great project to kick off the 2020 Year Of Good.

I hope to have the new Wish List linked from the blog by Thursday night or Friday morning. This is a great project for us.

I’m still feeling week, but have no fever and have stopped coughing all day, which is great. The sun came out this morning, and it was very healing for me to get outside with my camera.

A beautiful big and open sky was waiting for me.

The shine even send a ray down to greet me and Maria (and Zinnia and Fate). Bud was in the back yard.

  1. Hi, Jon–just a slight correction to the above. I work for the New York regents exam, and it actually is illegal for colleges to request our scores, or to use them in admissions decisions. The exams are ONLY necessary for graduating from high school in the state of New York. They are not, as you have said, “important for college.” Your donors should understand that and not be asked to give money for review books under false assumptions about the ultimate use of the exams.

    1. Thanks Jonathan, that’s not a slight correction, thanks for sending it. I actually was reading on the Regents website earlier tonight and saw that the tests were for graduation only, and deleted the reference some time ago. You might be interested in knowing that many students at different schools in the Albany area have told me that regents results – especially in the honors categories – have been and are very helpful when it comes to college admissions, legal or not. I appreciate your concern, but I don’t really need to be reminded that donors should not be asked to give donations for fraudulent purposes, I take that very seriously. I’m not at all certain it’s wrong to say these tests are important in more than one way, but I will be cautious, as I usually am. And these reviews are VERY important to the Bishop Maginn students. Again, thanks for writing me.

  2. What a wonderful photo. Capturing that sunbeam at the ideal moment.
This is a picture filled with hope and promise for the coming day.
