Two Dogs Writing With Me

by Jon Katz

Zinnia now sees my office as one of her headquarters. She is always with me when I am writing, and sometimes Bud wants to come in. But he is a restless dog, and sometimes they want to play and sometimes he wants to steal her stuff and sometimes the vacuum cleaner scares him.

So he goes into the crate and I have two writing dogs with me when I work. I like it, although most days Bud would rather be lying in front of the woodstove fire.

Bud is fond of his crate, I think he sometimes likes some peace from the marauding puppy, who is getting bigger than he perhaps imagined. This morning, I saw her dragging him across the dining room floor by the leg.

I broke it up.

I do not feel whole if there is not a writing dog sitting with me in my office. A smile photo.

  1. I feel bad for Bud because he doesn’t come across as special as Zinnia to you. Am I misjudging the situation?

    1. Peg, I don’t answer questions like that, they seem intrusive and inappropriate to me. I don’t feel the need to explain my feelings for each dog at any given moment for every person on Facebook. Zinnia is a new puppy and is getting a lot of attention, as Bud did when he came and Fate did when she came and Red and Gus did when they came. I don’t calibrate my dog’s emotions daily, they all have very good lives in my view and I don’t gauge the emotional well being of every dog each day, so I’ll pass on the question. I write what I feel like writing each day, and the readers will have to make their own judgment about it.

  2. Looks like you are twice-blessed for writing dogs.

I tend to end up with adults who are re-homed, I forget how quickly a large breed puppy transforms.

  3. It’s good to hear that Bud and Zinnia find such joy in each other. Dogs are pretty wonderful creatures. I’m glad you have your two writing companions in them. I love when my corgi helps me grade tests and prepare for class.

    1. Bud has been a great gift to Bud, he adores her and the two have fun all day. Somehow, he needed this kind of companion. Fate is very serious and doesn’t play all that much, Zinnia will play with Bud all day. He’s a sweetheart.

  4. I’ll answer. Yes, Peg, you are misjudging the situation on two levels. First, on its face. Second, and more, importantly, because it’s not your place to *judge.* My goodness.

  5. I love this post, Jon. And the photo. And the leg dragging. The daily joy of dogs. The miracle of work companions.
