Mastermind Caps: Bishop Maginn Battles The Big Guys

by Jon Katz

The Bishop Maginn Mastermind Teams – six-strong – travels the region taking on schools that have at least ten times as many students, sometimes more. Two weeks ago, I ordered caps that read “Bishop Maginn Masterminds,” and the team members loved them.

I don’t quite grasp the details, but it’s a scholastic battle of the Brainiacs, the intellectual equivalent of sports.

Bishop Maginn, under the leadership of a dedicated principal, is getting it’s Mojo back. The Mastermind team is 4-2 and has already beaten two of the high school powerhouses in the region.

The school has a drama program again, a computer lab, a science lab, a new choir and an award-winning arts program (designing murals all over Albany as well as the school). The students and teachers have access to Ipads and enough school supplies to last most of the year.

Everybody who wants winter boots or sweaters or jackets or socks has them, and every teacher who asked for textbooks got them.

My idea is to boost school spirit wherever I can, thanks to the Army Of Good. We also got hats for the mural painters “The Bishop Maginn Mural Mob.” I’ve asked the drama and choir directors if they want hats also.

It’s exhilarating to see the pride and energy flow back into this very worthy school and the smiles and spirit in the children’s faces.  The teachers tell me the kids walk taller and prouder in their caps.

We have also helped 10 students pay some or all of their tuition so they can remain at the school, and the school can have some money to spend.

This is the little school that could. And does. They have few resources and lots of dedication and love. The love is proving pretty powerful.

I can always use some help in supporting this school, a cause I am dedicated to.

If you want to contribute, you can do so via Paypal, [email protected], or by check, Jon Katz, Bishop Maginn, P.O. Box 205, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816. We are approaching the hard part of winter, and I suspect some of the kids will need some additional support getting the proper clothing.

I’m told the kids and families often don’t ask for help until they really, really, need it.

You can also make a tax-deductible contribution to the school’s scholarship fund by sending a check to Mike Tolan, Principal, Bishop Maginn High School, 75 Park Avenue, Albany, N.Y., 12202.

And thank you.
