Zinnia On Tour: Meltdown At The Dentist

by Jon Katz

It’s a Zinnia Day here at Bedlam Farm. We’re going to Bishop Maginn High School to teach my Writing Workshop, help the student volunteers train Zinnia to do therapy work at the school and distribute some winter clothes.

This morning, as promised, I brought Zinnia to the Cambridge Dental office where the place went into meltdown at the sight of her. My dentist’s office has volunteered – demanded – to be part of Zinnia’s socialization program.

It is a wonderful place for a puppy, the office staff gathered to meet her, love her, play with her. She was a happy puppy there, her tail going like a helicopter. They say if I don’t bring her on my office visits, don’t bother to come.

My dentist even said hello to me, briefly. If you want to be invisible travel around with Zinnia. No one will pay even the slightest attention. Two of the dental techs offered to be a Zinnia Godmother, I will take them up on it.

The sun is out, moods are lifting here, the last two or three days were just miserable. I am a creature of the light, I admit it. I ordered a gown, a shawl and jazzy shoes for one of the Bishop Maginn students, she’s going to a formal dance and didn’t have a dress. One of the girls who showed up at the dance made a crack about her summer dress in December.

I spoke with her yesterday. “Let’s bury that witch,” I said, and she can’t wait for the dance. I think she may need more clothes.

Off to Albany, Wednesday is Bishop Maginn School day.
